Student Travel Grant

The Center on China's Transnational Relations (CCTR) has set Aside funds for the academic year, 2004-2005, to help research students by absorbing the major expenses of their approved trips for thesis research. The thesis topic, however, must be related to the China's transnational relations. Broad conceptual framework can be drawn from studies on Chinese foreign affairs, China's foreign trade, inbound and outbound foreign direct investment, imports of raw materials, shipping and exports of consumer goods, population mobility and the flow of Chinese talent, educational exchanges, etc. All full-time students in the School of Humanities and Social Science are eligible to apply. Selected recipients can receive travel grants up to a maximum of HK$8,000. |

The center's director and associate director will evaluate the applications on the basis of merit, relevance of the topic to the Center's mandate, and actual research needs. Interested eligible students should submit three copies of the following materials to the general office of the Division of Social Science:
| (a) |
A research proposal, which should include:
| i. |
statement of purpose, including an outline of the significance of the project and where it fits into the scholarly literature; |
| ii. |
research questions; |
| iii. |
research methodology, including any arrangements already made to facilitate research on the mainland; |
| iv. |
itemized budget. |

| (b) |
Two letters of recommendation from faculty members familiar with the project. One of these should be your thesis adviser; |

| (c) |
Grade transcript. |

In submitting an application for the grant, students are advised to note the following conditions:
| (a) |
Applicants should schedule their research trips in a way that will not interfere with their duties as Teaching Assistants/Research Assistants (TA/RA) in the School. They should consult, in the first instance, their TA/RA supervisors on their thesis research travel plan; |

| (b) |
For reimbursement purpose, awardees should submit a brief report to the CCTR within two weeks after the trip, giving information on the relevant activities involved in the trip, plus original receipts and expense breakdown that can be absorbed by the grant; |
| |
| (c) |
The CCTR will want a working paper that draws on the research carried out under the grant. The paper will be posted on the CCTR's website; |

| (d) |
Those who are awarded the grant must acknowledge the financial assistance of the CCTR in the preface to their dissertations in such words as: "This study was made possible through the Student Travel Grant of the Center on China's Transnational Relations at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology"; and |

Applicants will be notified of the results soon after the review panel completes the evaluation of the submitted cases. |
